Accucraft April News

Welcome to our April news bulletin.  This month we are pleased to announce a new small 1:19 (16mm) Scale locomotive for release early next year, as well as some developments in the 1:32 Scale range.

New for 2022!  ‘Cranmore’ type Peckett 0-4-0ST in 1:19 Scale

Much encouraged by the good reception of our Quarry Hunslet and the almost complete sell-out of those little locomotives, we are delighted to announce our next ‘small’ 16mm Scale engine, the delightfully proportioned ‘Cranmore’ type Peckett 0-4-0ST. Peckett & Sons of Bristol had long been renowned for producing industrial tank engines, many of them small saddle tanks, and the ‘Cranmore’ type had its origins in an 0-4-0 saddle tank version of the special 7×10” cylinder design, Works No.1030 of 1904 Gamecock which would be later be referred to as a ‘Cranmore Class’. The order was placed by the Mendip Granite & Ashphalte Co. for its 2’ gauge line connecting the quarry to Cranmore Station on the GWR and after its career there it was scrapped, although it is not known when. Small numbers of this type continued to be built, mainly for export and one (Works No. 1711 of 1926) was bought by the Metropolitan Gas Co., Melbourne, Australia, named Sir John Grice in 1928. Withdrawn in 1941 it was sold in 1962, joining the Whistle Stop Amusement Park, Frankston in 1965. The 2’ 6” gauge locomotive later moved to the Puffing Billy Railway in 1974 as a static exhibit but restoration started in 1978 and it was returned to service in 1981 painted light green with yellow lining.

The model is gauge-adjustable (32mm and 45mm), gas-fired and fitted with a water top up valve (hidden under the tank filler), water gauge with blow-down valve, lubricator and pressure gauge; constructed of stainless steel and etched brass with a copper boiler, the model will, as usual, be covered by our two-year warranty. The anticipated UK RRP is £1595.00 (for pre-orders, subject to the usual provisos), available Q1 2022. As ever, we’d like to thank David Fletcher for his superb drawings, illustrating the livery options. In response to customer requests, we will be supplying the model with two domes, the factory original (ogee) pattern and the simpler Australian type. The locomotive is fitted Accucraft chopper couplings. You can see full details here. Specifications:

GWR 43XX Mogul 2-6-0 to be available as a kit!

Despite our early prediction that the 43XX might not be available as a kit we are delighted to report that the locomotive will also be available in this form.  Following the successful formula used with the Adams Radial Tank kits, assembly will be a simple nut and bolt together process requiring only simple tools and a bit of patience.

The model is built to1:32 scale for 45mm gauge track, gas-fired with a single flue boiler.  Built to a similar formula as our very successful 61XX 2-6-2T but with kit assembly in mind, the chassis is constructed from stainless steel, the wheels are un-insulated. The boiler is copper, the cab and bodywork are constructed from etched brass. The gas tank is in a water bath in the tender.  The model will run round 4′ 6″ radius curves and is happy on code 332 or code 250 tracks, however, we do not recommend running through LGB code 332 pointwork.  We are aware that there were a large number of livery variations among members of the class and will therefore be offering the variants subject to order volume.  The pre-shipment UK RRP will start at £2350.00 for the kit, £2500.00 for the RTR version, available to pre-order now.

Accucraft March News

Welcome to our March bulletin.  February saw the arrival of the first 100 ‘Large’ Quarry Hunslets in 1:19 (16mm) Scale.  This initial batch was entirely pre-sold but we should have further supplies during March so please be patient!  Work continues to develop the 43XX and design and drawing work on our next small 16mm (1:19) scale locomotive is now complete – all will be revealed in our April update!

New for 2021 – GWR 43XX 2-6-0 in 1:32 Scale – PRE-ORDER

Encouraging progress is being made on the production sample and we hope to bring you some images of that very soon.  Don’t miss out on getting yours in the first batch!

The GWR 43XX 2-6-0 ‘Moguls’ were a product of Churchward’s standardisation policy at Swindon and owe their origin to the ‘family’ of locomotives he developed at the beginning of the 20th century. The class was built in a series of batches from 1911 until 1923 with Collett adding further examples (with a side-window cab) between 1925 and 1932 and in total 342 of these useful mixed traffic locomotives were built, they were at home with passenger trains at 60mph as as with moderately heavy goods trains. The class served all over the Great Western and operated to destinations as diverse as Tonbridge, Andover and Liverpool and 11 examples from the 53XX series were sent to France to serve with the Railways Operating Division (ROD) during WW1.  During the 1930s class members were withdrawn and their wheels and motion parts used to create the ‘Manors’ and ‘Granges’, a process interrupted by WW2 after which British Railways started to scrap the entire class, the last examples being withdrawn in 1964.  Luckily two survived, No. 5322, now at Didcot Railway Centre, and Collett example No. 9303 at the Severn Valley Railway.

The model is built to1:32 scale for 45mm gauge track, gas-fired with a single flue boiler.  Built to a similar formula as our very successful 61XX 2-6-2T, the chassis is constructed from stainless steel, the wheels are un-insulated. The boiler is copper, the cab and bodywork are constructed from etched brass. The gas tank is in a water bath in the tender.  The model will run round 4′ 6″ radius curves and we are aware that there were a large number of livery variations among members of the class and will therefore be offering the variants subject to order volume. We’d like to thank David Fletcher for the marvellous drawings he has produced of this useful locomotive. You can see full details here.  UK RRP £2500.00, fully lined BR versions £2595.00.

16mm (1:19) Scale ‘Large’ Quarry Hunslet – ORDER NOW!

The first 100 Quarry Hunslets have now sold though and our dealers have all had their allocations.  The final batch is now complete at the factory and will be shipped soon – don’t miss out!

As soon as we had a chance to run our model of Dolgoch last March we realised that the design brief for this small locomotive had produced an almost perfect balance of performance and duration and, despite having instinctively avoided some of the smaller designs, the possibilities for new engines were now numerous.  With Talyllyn No.1 delivered we concentrated on the Quarry Hunslet, a design whose characteristics are much the same as the TR models and has proven to be a real crowd-pleaser.

The model is gas-fired and fitted with a water top up valve, water check valve, miniature pressure gauge; constructed of stainless steel and etched brass with a copper boiler, the model will, as usual, be covered by our two-year warranty.  The UK RRP is £1595.00. Accucraft February News

Welcome to our February bulletin.  This month will see the arrival of the first 100 ‘Large’ Quarry Hunslets in 1:19 (16mm) Scale.  This initial batch is entirely pre-sold but we should have further supplies during March so please be patient!  The factory has kindly supplied us with photos of liveries other than the lined Penrhyn sample we were originally sent.

Quarry Hunslets – due for delivery this month!

The more generous proportions of the ‘Large’ type Quarry Hunslets (as opposed to the smaller ‘Alice’ Class) will prove beneficial to the locomotive’s run-time although to avoid compromising the look of the model we will only be offering it in 32mm gauge. The model is gas-fired and fitted with a water top up valve, water check valve, miniature pressure gauge; constructed of stainless steel and etched brass with a copper boiler, the model will, as usual, be covered by our two-year warranty. In response to customer requests, we will be supplying the model with two chimney tops (both of which will be included), the factory original pattern and the Penrhyn Quarry type.

Accucraft January News

We’d like to wish all our customers and suppliers a Happy New Year and hope that 2021 proves to be better year than 2020!  With the hopeful news about vaccines it looks like some return to normal might be possible in the second half of the year and we look forward to seeing you at shows after then.  Whilst we are eagerly awaiting delivery of the new 1:19 scale Quarry Hunslets, the 1:32 J&M LSWR coaches (see below) and BR RMBs and work continues on progressing the design and tooling for the new 43XX, 1:19 scale ‘Lawley’ and the 1:20.3 scale Cavan & Leitrim 4-4-0Ts you might be forgiven for thinking we wouldn’t have any more tricks up our sleeve for 2021…..

New for 2021 – 1:13.7 (7/8ths”) scale Kerr Stuart ‘Sirdar’ Class 0-4-0T Diana

We are delighted to announce a new 7/8ths” locomotive for 2021.  Through the good offices of Diana’s owner, Phil Mason, and with the help of David Fletcher, we can reveal that the next new locomotive in this scale will be a model of the delightful Kerr Stuart ‘Sirdar’ 0-4-0T Diana.  Although there were other members of this class we will focus on the history of this unique survivor.

Diana was built in 1909 by Kerr Stuart as part of an order for six 2′ 5 1⁄2″ gauge locomotives for Mauritius. Although several of the locomotives in the order were sent to Mauritius, Diana wasn’t delivered and stayed at Kerr Stuart’s factory in Stoke on Trent. In 1917, the locomotive was purchased by the Home Grown Timber Committee of the Board of Trade for use on the Kerry Tramway, near Newtown, Powys in Mid Wales. It was rebuilt to 2′ gauge and delivered to Kerry, Powys.

The Kerry Tramway closed in 1922, though a short length was retained and worked by an unknown locomotive. In 1925, Diana was sold to the Oakeley Quarry in Blaenau Ffestiniog, where it worked for the next twenty years. In 1945, it was sold on to the Pen-yr-Orsedd Quarry in the Nantlle Valley, where it and worked until its boiler was condemned in 1950.

Diana was purchased for preservation in 1964 and passed through the hands of a variety of owners and moved to a number of different locations including the Llanberis Lake Railway, the Brecon Mountain Railway and Alan Keef’s in Ross on Wye although its restoration was never fully completed until it passed into the hands of Phil Mason, a Talyllyn Railway volunteer, who finished the work at the Vale of Rheidol Railway before setting the engine to work on the Bala Lake Railway.

The planned release of our model was pushed back six months by the Covid-19 outbreak but we anticipate a 2021 delivery. The model is gas-fired and fitted with a water top up valve, water gauge, miniature pressure gauge and lubricator; constructed of stainless steel and etched brass with a copper boiler, the locomotive has an enhanced level of detail made possible by this scale including a brake stand / gas control valve, dummy water gauges and sliding cab-sheet doors.  It is gauge-adjustable between 45mm and 32mm gauges.  The gas tank is concealed in the left hand side tank with the filler hidden under a dummy coal load, the Goodall top-up valve is hidden in the dummy sand pot on the boiler.  The estimated UK pre-order is £1695.00 and the model will be available direct from us or through our dealers.  Our thanks to Phil Mason for giving us unlimited access to the locomotive and David Fletcher for producing the superb drawings.

In addition to the help Phil Mason has given us he has very kindly arranged that every customer who purchases a model of Diana will be entitled to a free footplate ride on the prototype locomotive at the Amerton Railway near Stafford (subject to terms and conditions yet to be finalised) and the opportunity to pose their model with the real thing!  A numbered certificate confirming this will be issued with every model sold.

  • Scale: 22.5mm to 1 foot (1:13.7), 7/8ths” to 1 foot

Accucraft December News.

Happy Christmas!

We’d like to take this opportunity to wish you a Merry Christmas and a Happy New Year and thank you for your continued support during 2020. If we thought 2019 had been a tough year we clearly had no idea what 2020 had in store for us!  However, the company has, thus far, weathered the storm and we hope that you have not been too badly affected by the pandemic.  It is clear that a lot of people have been stuck at home with time on their hands and the arrival of the Accucraft Radial tank kits and the brand new Aster B1 kits have proved to be a remedy for this!  It is also apparent that many of you have been rummaging in cupboards for that “never built” Aster kit and we’d like to thank our colleagues in Japan for supplying so many spare parts for models which have been out of production for years.  Our office will be closed for the Christmas period from 22nd December, reopening on 4th January although emails will still be monitored; the last date for UK orders/deliveries will be 17th December.

Now available – Talyllyn Railway 0-4-2ST No.1 TalyllynORDER NOW!

TR No.1 Talyllyn is now in available although some versions are already out of stock. The next batch will not be shipped until the new year so don’t miss out if you would like one for Christmas!  The model is built to a scale of 16mm:1′ (1:19 scale), internally gas-fired with a centre flue boiler. The model is not gauge adjustable but is available in either 32mm (‘O’ gauge) or 45mm (‘1′ gauge) and does not have insulated wheels. Although fitted with TR buffers and couplings the model can be fitted with our Z1/Z2 chopper couplings for those who wish to use them.  UK RRP £1675.00 – Versions available:

New for 2021 – SAR/SAS NG6 ‘Lawley’ 4-4-0 – PRE -ORDER

Although the project got knocked back by the pandemic, progress continues to be made with our forthcoming ‘Lawley’.  Gordon Watson of Argyle Locomotive Works kindly assembled a trial chassis to demonstrate the full Stephenson valve gear and the factory is now working up production drawings.

The museum quality model is internally gas fired and is gauge adjustable for either 32mm (‘0’ gauge) or 45mm (‘1’ gauge) – all the parts for this are supplied with the model. This operation can be undertaken by the owner and only takes a few minutes. The cab roof lifts up to give access to the water and lubricator fillers. The boiler is fitted with a water gauge, pressure gauge and the lubricator has an under floor drain, the gas tank is in a water bath in the tender. The model is fitted with slide valves, functioning Stephenson valve gear and is built from stainless steel, copper and brass and will be supplied with both single and double-skinned cab roofs as well as a choice of glazed or louvred cab windows.  Estimated UK RRP £2950.00 inc. VAT.

Accucraft November News

Welcome to the November Accucraft UK update.  As we settle into our new premises (and very nice they are too!) we’d like to take the opportunity to review the status of some current projects.   We have also taken delivery of the last of the Adams Radial Tanks and expect these to be sold out in the New Year when their matching bogie coaches will be delivered.  Due for completion during December are the first hundred Quarry Hunslets and these should arrive in January with the 1:32 RMB coaches.  Good progress has been made on the 1:32 scale GWR 43XX Mogul and production of these should commence once the Quarry Hunslets have been delivered.

Lest we forget….

This year marks the centenary of the repatriation of the body of the unknown warrior and the conveyance of the coffin to London by rail.  The arrival of November reminds us that we will soon, once again, be paying our respects to those who fell in conflict, particularly the many railwaymen who volunteered for service in both World Wars.  However, it was not just men who served, a great many British locomotives also found their way abroad and our forthcoming Great Western Railway 43XX 2-6-0 represents a class “which also served”.  To commemorate this we will be producing versions carrying the livery of the Railway Operating Division, or ‘ROD’, indeed preserved example, No. 5322, was one of those to see action in Northern France during WW1.  You can find full details of these attractive locomotives here.

Talyllyn Railway No.1 Talyllyn

We will be delivering the first examples of these lovely locomotives this month and the factory has sent us some images of the first one to be finished in TR black livery.  You can find full details of the model here.

The new 16mm (1:19) scale Quarry Hunslet in action

Through the good offices of Dave Mees in North Wales we were able to put the sample locomotive through its paces in ‘real’ operating conditions.  The delightful little locomotive showed that it was both biddable and strong, hauling as many wagons as the prototype might have been expected to handle and promising much more.  Here is a short clip of the locomotive in action.  Due for delivery in January, you can find further information here.

Our friend in Germany, Lorenz Schug, has taken delivery of a further batch of these locomotives in a range of new liveries for those might have preferred something other than black!  Available through Accucraft UK with a RRP of £1995.00, please contact us if you are interested.

Accucraft October News

Welcome to the October news bulletin.  We are pleased to say that the first batch of the new TR No. 1 Talyllyn is well under way and that the final Radial tanks will be delivered with the B1s.  We also bring you news of our impending sale and move of office.

Last call for the Radial tanks!

This really is the last opportunity to pick up one of these beautiful Victorian locomotives.  The final batch of these arrive in the UK shortly which means we will have just a few examples of each livery left in stock including the new variant, a Drummond green example carrying a Drummond boiler and numbered 486.  This is also the last opportunity you will have to avail yourselves of the chance to pick up a matching set of L&SWR carriages at a 10% discount (if you have purchased a Radial tank).  You can see all the liveries available here.

We’re moving!

As announced previously, we are in the process of moving the office to a new address to allow our landlord the chance to repair the badly leaking roof of our industrial unit.  The new office will not, alas, be open to passing visitors.  From 5th October the new address will be:

Accucraft UK Ltd.
PO Box 394
Hereford
Herefordshire
HR1 9QN

Telephone (the same) 01981 241380, email (the same) info@accucraft.uk.com

Please bear with us during October, we may not be able to get goods out as quickly as we would like and the supply of spare parts may be delayed until we sort the new workshop out.

Last call for the moving sale!

We know many of you were disappointed that we had to scratch our Spring Sale and open day due to the Covid-19 outbreak and we are now planning to have a sale during the last week in September, now made more urgent by the need to leave the premises we currently occupy!  The sale will held on the basis of individual 30 minute pre-booked appointments which will allow customers to safely browse the stock being offered and make their purchases in a controlled Covid-19 secure atmosphere (subject to the restrictions in place at the time).  Given that much of the stock consists of ‘open box’ items, show stock (complete with travel boxes in most instances), ‘end of line’ items and original prototypes, it will be sold ‘as seen’ and we will be unable to publish a complete list of all that will be on offer but the image below gives an idea of some of those items available, the boxes will be for collection only.  The sale will start at 11:00hrs on Monday 28th September with appointments on the hour and half past the hour until 16:00hrs – the sale will only last the week.  Please ring or email us with your preferred time (and adjacent times in case that slot is already taken) – the Monday is now fully booked and Tuesday is filling up.  In addition to the locomotives and rolling stock on offer we will have a selection of Code 332 track for sale.

U.S. End of Line offers

We have the following locomotives, which are now sold out in the UK, available from our inventory in Union City, California.  Each locomotive is offered with a free item of rolling stock!  Some of these are the last, single examples of their type, so this really is the ‘last chance saloon’ for some of these models.  ‘Phone the office for further details or to purchase.

Accucraft September News

Welcome to our September update.  This month we can share some of the first images of the new Quarry Hunslet with you, as well as news of our moving sale and some never to be repeated US offers!

16mm (1:19) Scale Quarry Hunslet breaks cover!

We were thrilled to receive the production prototype of our new ‘Large’ Quarry Hunslet, a real vindication of our newly discovered ‘small engine policy’ (with respect to the Midland Railway!).  The locomotive is a gem and is beautifully detailed, right down to working sliding doors in the cab back sheet.  Trials are underway but we hope that the locomotive will be happy steaming for 25-30 minutes if the boiler is topped up (there is a Goodall valve under the filler cap on the saddle tank).  You can find full details here.

Trackshack closure

It is with regret that we have to report that Trackshack on the Isle of Man has closed with immediate effect.

We have enjoyed a long and fruitful relationship with John Boyes and his team and watched the business grow from small beginnings into a major contender in the supply of garden railway equipment.  In that time Trackshack commissioned numerous bespoke projects from us and thus broadened the range and variety of items available to the hobby.  The firm quickly garnered a reputation for competitive prices and friendly and efficient service and we are most appreciative of the orderly way in which the operation is being shut down with pre-orders for Accucraft locomotives being transferred to us for direct supply.

We appreciate that those customers who placed forward orders with Trackshack may be concerned about the supply of their locomotives and have written a letter of comfort to them, outlining the way in which their goods will be supplied.  Covid-19 has caused an international hiatus which has had an impact on all model engineering firms and Accucraft UK is no exception. We must apologise for delays in releasing some future projects, Talyllyn Railway No.1 Talyllyn is in production at the factory right now and should be delivered in late September, this will be followed by the Large Quarry Hunslet during the winter with the Cavan & Leitrim 4-4-0T and the SAR Lawley 4-4-0 following on next year. If you have any concerns, our full terms and conditions are published on our website, please keep an eye on this for further updates concerning the release date of these models.

You can read our letter to Trackshack customers here.

Accucraft August News

Welcome to the Accucraft (UK) august update.  After a slight lull we have plenty for you this month, the good news is that we have announced a new, Gauge 1, 1:32 scale locomotive to follow on from the very successful Adams Radial Tank and a new date for our cancelled Spring warehouse sale.  The bad news is that the latter is now an urgent priority since we are going to have to quit these premises by November!  Anyway, read on for full details….

New for 2021 – GWR 43XX 2-6-0 in 1:32 Scale

Autumn Sale!

We know many of you were disappointed that we had to scratch our Spring Sale and open day due to the Covid-19 outbreak and we are now planning to have a sale during the last week in September, now made more urgent by the need to leave the premises we currently occupy!  It is proposed that the sale will held on the basis of individual 30 minute pre-booked appointments which will allow individuals to safely browse the stock being offered and make their purchases in a controlled Covid-19 secure atmosphere (subject to the restrictions in place at the time).  Given that much of the stock consists of ‘open box’ items, show stock (complete with travel boxes in most instances), ‘end of line’ items and original prototypes, it will be sold ‘as seen’ and we will be unable to publish a complete list of all that will be on offer but the image below gives an idea of some of those items available.  We will publish a schedule of appointments in the next bulletin – given the boxes available this will be for collection only.

“It never rains but it pours!”

As alluded to above, if the Covid-19 epidemic wasn’t enough, we need to vacate our current industrial unit to allow our landlord to make much-needed and long-overdue repairs to the valley gutter between the two roofs of the building.  Many of you will be aware that we have occasionally had water-damaged stock for sale, now you know why!  We will therefore be moving into new offices and putting the stock in temporary storage, one consequence of which will be an inability to remain open for visitors although we will continue to supply goods by courier.  The office move will probably occur during October and Unit 4 will be closed as of 31st of that month.  Naturally our ‘phone number will remain the same, as will our email address!  Please bear with us during this process!

J&M Coaches – CIWL sleeping cars

We need to remind you that the gorgeous CIWL cars being hand-made at the factory are a limited run and are selling well.  These splendid coaches, complete with detailed interiors and lighting, form the first part of a batch that will eventually enable the customer to assemble a complete ‘Train Bleu’ consist, including dining car and fourgon vehicles – if you wish to assemble such a train you need to act quickly to avoid missing out on these sleepers.  UK RRP £950.00 per car, £3610.00 for a set of four individually numbered cars.
