Accucraft July News

Welcome to our July bulletin.  The good news is that the first delivery of the 1:32 Scale Adams Radial tank engines has arrived!  The kits and the balance of the ready-to run locomotives will follow shortly and don’t forget the ‘one time’ offer of L&SWR coaches to accompany these attractive locomotives – here are all the liveries available:

We have been made aware of one small issue, the filling of the oil reservoir in the left hand tank.  It seems that the boiler handrail prevents easy access to the plug to the tank and we’d like to suggest a simple solution, slide the handrail out of the way (illustrated)!  Alternatively a joggle could be put in the handrail to facilitate access.

New narrow gauge coupling accessory!

We have had numerous enquiries for these little gizmos, Z1 or Z2 chopper coupling bob-weight chopper hooks – on their own.  Many people have expressed a desire to upgrade their old Accucraft couplings to the new bob-weight fitted version and now you can!  These are sold in packs of ten hooks (enough for five vehicles) and retail for £9.50 – available from your local Accucraft stockist now.

Lockdown Locomotive Lectures

Whilst we have been stuck in the office and unable to attend shows or meetings it has been hard to know what to to do to entertain our customers. So, we came up with the idea of producing a series of short videos looking over some of our recently, or soon to be, released locomotives.  Enjoy!

Coronavirus / Covid 19 update – office closure

Following the government’s advice, we are taking measures to protect our staff and our customers.  As of today the office is closed to visitors and we will be working reduced hours.  We will be monitoring emails and responding as quickly as we can.  Having discussed the necessary protocols with our couriers we will be maintaining a skeleton delivery service, this will probably mean that we will only be sending goods out on one day per week, usually a Wednesday.

Spare parts will still be available but we will be restricted to sending only those that will fit in a small padded envelope.  Again, if you need Accucraft spares please email us.

Future deliveries have been interrupted by the virus and the soaring cost of air freight and we are sorry to report that the Adams Radial tanks will be delayed in consequence.  As soon as we have an accurate ETA we will publish it here.  We hope that you all stay safe and well and derive some solace from your railway modelling activities.

Coronavirus / Covid 19 update – Gauge 1 offers

In light of the recent news and advice from the government we have decided to postpone our open day and sale, scheduled for 18th April.  As many of you know, all exhibitions until at least June have now been postponed or cancelled, the National Garden Railway Show will now be held on Saturday 14th November at the Peterborough Arena – you can read more about the show here.  Similarly the G1MRA Spring Meeting at Shepshed on the 25th April has been cancelled and the inaugural Llangollen Show, planned for 30th May, has been re-scheduled to Saturday 3rd October, further details in due course.

We would ask all of you to continue to support our retailers and, when the show season re-commences, please help the various associations who have made a huge effort to re-schedule events.  As long as our couriers continue to operate our office will stay open for business which means that for those of you who are worried about going ‘stir crazy’ stock will still be available – don’t forget that we will soon have the new Accucraft Radial Tank kits in stock, so the constructors among you won’t be short of something for the workbench.

Don’t forget that we will be attending the show at the Warwickshire Event Centre just off the Fosse way near Warwick over the weekend of the 14th and 15th March.  Please drop by the stand to see all the latest products and catch up with recent news.  Full details at the bottom of this newsletter.  Full details here.

Accucraft UK goes to sea!

We were honoured to be included on the A1 Steam Locomotive Trust stand aboard HMS Prince of Wales over the first weekend of March whilst the carrier was docked in Liverpool.  This was the first time that either of the Queen Elizabeth class ships had been open to the public and some 20,000 people came to look over the ship and meet some of the vessel’s affiliates.  Representing the A1SLT as one of their directors, Graham Langer of Accucraft UK was able to run an Accucraft Gauge 1 live steam A1 Class Tornado on a rolling road.  The model, one of a limited batch, ran for up to five hours a day during the three days without any trouble, fascinating members of the public and crew alike.  Accucraft UK donated £10,000 towards the construction of the full-size locomotive and is supporting the build of new LNER Class P2 Mikado No. 2007 Prince of Wales in Darlington.

Accucraft February News

Welcome to our February news bulletin, we bring you the welcome news that the ‘G’ Vans are in stock, the design for the Quarry Hunslet is complete, we set a date for this year’s Open Day and some rare Accucraft locomotives become available for sale.

New for 2020 – 16mm (1:19 scale) ‘Large’ Quarry Hunslet

As soon as we had a chance to run Dolgoch last March we realised that the design brief for this small locomotive had produced an almost perfect balance of performance and duration and, having instinctively avoided some of the smaller designs, the possibilities for new engines were now numerous.  With Talyllyn No.1 designed and signed off we immediately re-drew our 7/8ths” Quarry Hunslet as a 16mm model, a design whose characteristics will be much the same as the TR models and should prove to be a real crowd-pleaser.

By the mid-19th century, the North Wales slate mines and quarries had a requirement for small, powerful and rugged locos to work the galleries and tramways in what was by then a rapidly expanding industry.  Various manufacturers supplied narrow gauge motive power to these businesses but none became more synonymous with the area than the saddle tanks supplied by the Hunslet Engine Co. of Leeds.  These sturdy little locos were ideal for the roughly laid, temporary lines in the quarries and the class evolved from the first design, produced in 1870, to encompass a variety of sizes and types which found work at Penrhyn, Dinorwic (where many acquired the names of racehorses!) and the Nantlle valley.  Remarkably the majority of those locos still in service in the 1960′s survived to be preserved, some of them in America and Canada.  Today Quarry Hunslets are still being produced in limited numbers by the new Hunslet Engine Co. based at the Statfold Barn Railway.

The more generous proportions of the ‘Large’ type Quarry Hunslets (as opposed to the smaller ‘Alice’ Class) will prove beneficial to the locomotive’s run-time although to avoid compromising the look of the model we will only be offering it in 32mm gauge.  The model is gas-fired and fitted with a water top up valve, water check valve, miniature pressure gauge; constructed of stainless steel and etched brass with a copper boiler, the model will, as usual, be covered by our two-year warranty.  The anticipated UK RRP is £1595.00 (subject to the usual provisos), available Q3 2020.  As ever, we’d like to thank David Fletcher for his superb drawings, illustrating the livery options.

1:20.3 Scale Isle of Man ‘G’ Vans now in stock

We are delighted to report that the Isle of Man ‘G’ Vans are now in stock at your local dealer.  These gorgeous vehicles will enhance any railway and would make great generic vans for almost any Irish 3′ gauge line.

For the opening of the Peel Line in 1873, the Isle of Man Railway included in its initial stock purchase from the Metropolitan Carriage & Wagon Co, four hand-braked covered goods vans with load 6 tons and central double-doors to each side. The covered vans were allocated the stock letter “G” when a revised identity system was introduced by the Railway after 1876.  Two additional vans (G.5 & G.6) were supplied new by the Ashbury Carriage & Wagon Co in 1877, a single van (G.7) was believed built by the Railway itself in 1897 using spares and parts supplied by Metropolitan, followed by two further examples (G.8 & G.9) supplied new by Metropolitan in 1899, all to the same basic early-type design. Van G.1 is extant and currently stored out-of-use on the Railway. The remaining early-type “G” vans were in use until the 1960’s, but scrapped by 1975.

The Isle of Man Railway inherited four covered ventilated vans of a different design from the Manx Northern Railway in 1904 and built a further five longer-body examples itself between 1915 and 1921 using  redundant chassis from original 4-wheel carriage stock.  The portholes on the side panels of a number of “G” vans were modifications by the Railway to improve ventilation for carrying perishable goods, live poultry and even horses!

Happy New Year!

Welcome to our first 2020 website bulletin.  This month we bring you news of our next 16mm (1:19 scale) locomotive to follow Talyllyn No.1, updates for some forthcoming items and following a tidy-up in the warehouse, a few special offers to start the new season off!
