Accucraft January News

Belated Happy New Year!  2022 has dawned brightly with the gorgeous little Cranmore Pecketts delivered to their new owners.  We are pleased/sorry to say that a rash of new orders has reduced our available free stock to a couple of examples of each livery and we don’t anticipate these staying around long!  With all the parts already made we should be able to produce further batches in due course.  In other news we are delighted to announce our next ‘small’ locomotive in 16mm (1:19) scale, Rheidol, and have further tempting offerings in ‘The Clearing House’.

New for 2022/3 – 16mm (1:19) scale Bagnall 0-4-2T Rheidol

Following the release of the gorgeous little Peckett, we are delighted to announce that our next small locomotive will be the Bagnall 2-4-0T Rheidol. One of Archangel’s most successful models in the early days of 16mm scale, we are sure many associated with the hobby will have soft spot for this engine! Originally named Treze de Maio (Portuguese for 13th May, the date on which slavery was abolished in Brazil), the engine was built by Bagnalls of Stafford for Collier Antunes for a sugar cane plantation in 1896 but never delivered as the order was cancelled, instead the locomotive was re-gauged from 2’ 5 ½” gauge to 2’ 3” gauge when it was sold to the Plynlimon and Hafan Tramway and named Talybont. In 1903, after the failure of that railway, it was purchased for the construction of the Vale of Rheidol Railway, re-gauged to 1’ 11 ¾” and renamed Rheidol. Absorbed by the GWR in 1923 it was numbered it 1198, but it was withdrawn and scrapped the following year, having never carried its GWR number.

The model is gauge-adjustable (32mm and 45mm), gas-fired and fitted with a water top-up valve, water gauge with blow-down valve, lubricator and pressure gauge; constructed of stainless steel and etched brass with a copper boiler, the model will, as usual, be covered by our two-year warranty. The anticipated pre-order RRP is £1695.00 (subject to the usual provisos), available late 2022 or early 2023. Fitted with Accucraft chopper couplings, the model will be supplied with two chimneys, the original balloon stack and the more traditional type. Available in six liveries, full details can be found on the Accucraft UK website. As ever, we’d like to thank David Fletcher for his superb drawings, illustrating the livery options.  You can find full details here.

New Vale of Rheidol book launched

Coincidental with our announcement of the little Bagnall, the Vale of Rheidol Railway has released a new book.

Many years have been spent researching the railway’s own archives and archaeology dating back to the opening of the line in 1902 to produce this sumptuous volume. With the research coupled with detailed measured drawings, the book presents an unrivalled description of the Railway’s history, equipment and infrastructure.

The highly detailed drawings include locomotives, passenger carriages, goods stock, service vehicles, bridges, signalling, trackwork, station buildings, lineside equipment, water columns etc. Also featured are a fascinating selection of photographs, documents and ephemera from the railway’s own archives from opening to the present day. Many of these illustrations are being reproduced for the first time with many in colour. Carefully prepared livery diagrams illustrate the myriad of paint schemes used by the railway, including Brighton Ochre and BR Rail Blue.

In addition to providing a comprehensive record of locomotives, carriages, wagons and buildings, some now long disappeared, aided by primary source information and close examination of surviving equipment, the work brings the record up to date with extensive details of modern developments and equipment. This includes a unique behind-the scenes insight into the engineering and operation of a modern preserved narrow gauge steam railway.

The book will be available, only from the Vale of Rheidol Railway, in January 2022.

Accucraft December Extra!

We’d like to share some late-breaking news with you all!

Bowaters Models

We are delighted to announce that Bowaters Models have now joined the ranks of Accucraft dealers.  Based in West Sussex, the firm has been developing an extensive range of laser cut kits in 1:32 scale and the narrow gauges and has recently added the Fareham Carriage Works and Bona Models lines to the brands it carries.

Jon Reeves of Bowaters said, “We have had a long working relationship with Accucraft (having used their couplings for a while), even designing specific rolling stock to run with their latest locomotives (their Adams Radial and upcoming GWR 43xx being prime examples). We’re delighted to be able to list their products and look forward to any additions they bring out! To keep things simple for now and to allow the business to continue to grow, we will only be listing what Accucraft has in stock for the time being. It is hoped and expected as this side of the business grows, we will be able to accept pre orders later in 2022/early 2023. We do have a few things planned regarding new engine releases but we will say what they are at the time of release.”

You can find the Bowaters Models website here.

1:19 Peckett ‘Cranmore’ 0-4-0ST

With shipping fast approaching, the factory has been able to share some images of all the liveries announced for this lovely little engine.  Hardly needing any further help in the looks department we feel that they represent one of the most attractive offerings on the current UK market.

Available to pre-order through your local retailer or direct from us, they should be here early in 2022!  Still available at their pre-order price of just £1595.00 although only a limited number remain available in the first batch.  You can see full details here.

Another date for your diaries!  Unfortunately the first attempt to hold this show was scuppered by Covid-19 so full marks to the organisers for holding their nerve and trying again in 2022.  We look forward to seeing you there.

Accucraft December News

Welcome to our December update.  We hope it is not too early to wish you all a Happy Christmas and a peaceful New Year after what has been another challenging year for many of us.  Ongoing supply and shipping problems have caused our production and delivery timetable to shift several times and we apologise for the lateness of the 1:32 scale 43XX Mogul.  The good news is that progress has been made on the production of the 1:19 scale Peckett 0-4-0ST and a sample of the 1:19 scale ‘Lawley’ is being assembled.  We’d like to take this opportunity to introduce you to ‘The Clearing House’, as explained below, and remind you that one of the first exhibitions we will be attending in 2022 is the Midlands Garden Railway Show on 12th & 13th March.

New Accucraft stockist!

Following the closure of our unit at Pontrilas we have been aware that there are no ‘walk in’ dealerships covering this area.  Therefore, we are delighted to announce that Derails in Coleford have joined the Accucraft ‘family’, covering Gloucestershire and south-east Wales and will be stocking the Accucraft UK range.  It is encouraging to find young people such as Dan Winter injecting so much energy into the hobby and we wish him every success.

Accucraft October News

Welcome to our October update.  As the weather in the UK starts to turn autumnal, thoughts may start to turn towards Christmas – it certainly has for the world’s shipping companies and the cost of freight continues to spiral upwards. Unfortunately this means we are unlikely to be able to ship any rolling stock before the New Year (in the hope that at that stage some normality starts to return to the market).  In consequence we have delayed the delivery of the new 1:32 scale Mk1 RMB coaches and a balancing number of Mk1 SKs and BSKs but have brought forward the production of the 1:19 Peckett 0-4-0ST.

New for 2022!  ‘Cranmore’ type Peckett 0-4-0ST in 1:19 Scale

We are delighted to share an initial image of the sample of the new 1:19 (16mm) scale Peckett.  The model is gauge-adjustable (32mm and 45mm), gas-fired and fitted with a water top up valve, water gauge with blow-down valve, lubricator and pressure gauge; constructed of stainless steel and etched brass with a copper boiler, the model will, as usual, be covered by our two-year warranty. The anticipated UK RRP is £1595.00 (for pre-orders, subject to the usual provisos), available Q1 2022 (or maybe sooner!). In response to customer requests, we will be supplying the model with two domes, the factory original (ogee) pattern and the simpler Australian type. The locomotive is fitted Accucraft chopper couplings. You can see full details here.

British Railways Mk1 RMB

We have recently received the first image of the sample RMB from the factory and very good it is too.  Great care has been paid to the roof detail in particular (one of the most obvious features in a garden railway setting).  It is likely that the SKs and BSKs being produced at the same time will be the last run we make of these, so, if you need to add them to your collection, a pre-order with your favoured retailer is advised.

Last call for the Southern Pacific P-8 4-6-2.

We will be shipping the Accucraft SP P-8 in October and it is now also be available as a kit.  This really is the last call if you would like to get one of these before Christmas!

Accucraft September News

The current hiatus affecting worldwide shipping and the closure of Shanghai’s principal airport because of Covid-19 is throwing up some particular challenges for our business, compromising both the supply of parts and the delivery of finished products.  There may be some adjustment to the order in which we deliver future projects and we would ask for your indulgence while we try to resolve these issues.

‘Lawley’ latest!

Although the project got knocked back by the pandemic, progress continues to be made with our forthcoming ‘Lawley’. The museum quality model is internally gas fired and is gauge adjustable for either 32mm (‘0’ gauge) or 45mm (‘1’ gauge) – all the parts for this are supplied with the model. This operation can be undertaken by the owner and only takes a few minutes. The cab roof lifts up to give access to the water filler. The boiler is fitted with a water gauge, pressure gauge and the gas tank is in a water bath in the tender (which also has a dry space for fitting radio control). The model is fitted with slide valves, functioning Stephenson valve gear and is built from stainless steel, copper and brass. Estimated UK RRP £2950.00 inc. VAT – don’t miss the pre-order price!

Revisions during the design stage have included the provision of a single-skinned roof only, sliding cabside louvres, twin lubricators and the decision to produce the headlamps as an after-market accessory.

Research has shown that the SAR green livery is close enough to justify using the same colour as that which we applied to our Lynton & Barnstaple locomotives and it would not be too great a stretch of the imagination to envisage one of these plying its trade in North Devon!

S19-36A Lawley NG6 4-4-0 – Beira Railway Green
S19-36B Lawley NG6 4-4-0 – SAR Green
S19-36C Lawley NG6 4-4-0 – SAR Black

The images above show the final refinements to the design prior to construction commencing. There will be plenty of room in the cab to allow the fitting of radio control. The cabside louvres can be slid far enough back to be removed completely if the operator wishes the locomotive to have a more British appearance.

Narrow gauge coaches

The Lynton & Barnstaple Brake Composite coaches are now in stock. This is a very small, one-time production run and individual brakes will only be available with one other type of coach, either R19-19/20/20. The UK RRP for the brake composites is currently £175.00, the other coaches remain at £150.00, so, £325.00 for a pair. Please place your orders (plus choice of additional coaches) as soon as possible to avoid disappointment. Please note that this price is only applicable to the current UK stock since the escalation in shipping costs is bound to push up the RRP of any further supplies from the factory.

We are pleased to say that we have also just taken delivery of more Isle of Man ‘Pairs’ coaches. However, the prices only apply to current stock, future deliveries will see these rise. The coaches are supplied with both 45mm and 32mm gauge wheelsets which are easily changed. Make sure you get your order in now!

R19-10 ISLE of MAN 4 WHEEL COACH – 3rd – MAROON & CREAM £90.00
R19-10G ISLE of MAN 4 WHEEL COACH – 3rd – GREEN & CREAM £90.00

Gauge 1 K Class Pullman Cars – further news

The Gauge 1 Pullmans are based on the monocoque K-Type steel-sided stock introduced in the late 1920s. A total of 33 K-Type Pullman cars were built with the first batch of 20 cars destined for LNER and the newly branded Queen of Scots and West Riding Pullman trains in July 1928. A further nine first-class vehicles were supplied the following year for the GWR with the launch of the Torbay Pullman Limited and the Plymouth Ocean Liner Specials.

At the end of the short-lived GWR experiment, this set of Pullman cars was transferred to Southern metals for Southampton Ocean Liner Specials and the new Bournemouth Belle service which commenced operation on 8 July 1931. A further four third-class Pullman cars based on the 1928 designs were added to the Bournemouth Belle service. Up until WW2 Southampton Ocean Liner Specials were generally made up of three to four Pullman cars (without parlour brakes) together with an assortment of other Southern carriage stock and luggage vans.

By the early 1950s Pullman travel was de rigueur as many Southampton boat trains pulled into the newly completed Ocean Terminal consisting entirely of Pullman cars. Named after individual liners and their shipping lines, Cunard, United States Line, P&O, Union Castle, deluxe London travel connections extended from the ship to the rail head.

Gauge 1 Pullmans will be produced to echo the pre-nationalisation period of the 1930s and 40s and the BR era when new Pullman services were introduced.  Pullmans will be produced in standard umber and cream livery and come with grey roofs. The pre-nationalisation stock will incorporate the original Pullman emblem and third-class vehicle designation; they will look fabulous hauled by the new Aster P2 locomotive. The BR Pullmans will come with the new simplified Pullman insignia, revised lining, and car no. designation.

Pullman car ordering options:

  • First and third-class parlour cars
  • First and third-class kitchen cars and
  • Third-class parlour brakes.

In addition, we will consider producing a special range of Pullman Bar Cars if there is sufficient interest.

Only four of the original K-Type cars were ever built as third-class parlour brakes – none as first-class parlour brakes. However, six of the original K-Type third-class kitchen cars nos. 67-72 were later converted into parlour brake cars and these form an additional BR period Pullman brake offering. The rebuilt parlour brakes are different to the original set cars nos. 77-80 built for Queen of Scots’ running. The differences include revised roof layout at luggage end, smaller drop windows on either side of the guard’s luggage area, no roof brackets as carriage boards moved to the cantrail at brake car ends and revised light fitting above guard’s door. They were of a more modern appearance.

Whilst there was always a degree of fluidity over how Pullman cars were allocated to specific regions and services, named and numbered Pullman cars without suffixes largely operated on east coast routes with the Queen of Scots and West Riding Pullman etc.

All Pullman cars come in umber and cream livery with grey roofs.

Individual car price: £1,250
Pairs of Pullman brakes and two other cars £4,780
Orders of more than four vehicles are priced at £1,195 per car.

Accucraft August News

Accucraft UK – Aster – an announcement

It is with regret that we have decided to relinquish our UK distributorship and sales of the Aster Hobby Inc brand of models. This will be effective from Monday 2nd August.

Although over the past few years we have made many new friends in the 1:32 market it has become increasingly clear that the Aster agency has diverted our attention and energies away from our core business, Accucraft UK. We will continue to concentrate on making affordable gas-fired British-outline locomotives for the Gauge 1 market, such as the recently delivered Adams Radial Tank and forthcoming GWR 43XX and already have plans for next year’s project. However, until a new distributor is appointed, Accucraft UK will continue to support owners of current and older Aster models with its first-class parts and service backup.

We have a small residual stock of Aster Mikados, 5MTs and LNER B1s – please enquire about availability.

Progress with the ‘Lawley’

After a few delays in production we are delighted to say that the 1:19 scale ‘Lawley’ 4-4-0 is making progress with the factory working up the CADs for the design prior to production.  This is likely to be a one-time run so if you wish to acquire one we suggest you place a reservation as soon as possible, either with your preferred Accucraft stockist or directly with us.

The museum quality model is internally gas fired and is gauge adjustable for either 32mm (‘0’ gauge) or 45mm (‘1’ gauge) – all the parts for this are supplied with the model. This operation can be undertaken by the owner and only takes a few minutes. The cab roof lifts up to give access to the water and lubricator fillers. The boiler is fitted with a water gauge, pressure gauge and the lubricator has an under floor drain, the gas tank is in a water bath in the tender. The model is fitted with slide valves, functioning Stephenson valve gear and is built from stainless steel, copper and brass and will be supplied with a choice of glazed or louvred cab windows.  Estimated UK RRP £2950.00 inc. VAT.  You can find full details here.

Accucraft July News

Welcome to our July update.  With better weather it has been good to hear that many of you are back in the garden!  We’d like to thank those customers who dropped by our stand at the National Garden Railway Show, it is always good to see old friends or put a face to a new name.  It seems likely that the Peterborough show will again be held in June next year and the date will shortly be confirmed.

New South Coast dealer!

We are delighted to announce that we have a new dealer in place in Swanage on the Isle of Purbeck.  Greenwood & Pring already offer their own range of laser cut accessories and track for O Gauge and Gauge 1 through the Greenwood Railway Products brand, as well as items for the smaller scales.  Although they specialise in 1:43 and 1:32 scales, all our products will be available through them.  Both Mike Green and Martyn Pring have long associations with the hobby and it will be a pleasure to work with them.

However, this is also the start of a long-term collaboration to bring high-quality brass-constructed coaches to the Gauge 1 (1:32 scale) market and we are pleased to say that in a reciprocal deal we will be able to offer the Greenwood & Pring range to our customers as well.  Plans for their next offering are at an early stage but the company has already indicated that it will be releasing a new range of 1:32 scale British Pullman cars next year and we will bring you further details of these as soon as they are available.  The first production run will be for new parlour brakes (not produced before) split amongst the following Pullman car numbers:

Parlour brake car no. 67
Parlour brake car no. 68
Parlour brake car no. 69
Parlour brake car no. 70
Parlour brake car no. 71
Parlour brake car no. 72

The price will around the thousand-pound mark and we are currently taking pre-orders.  The Greenwood & Pring range will also be available from Accucraft US through their Live Steam Station website.

43XX now in production!

We are pleased to report that the new 1:32 scale GWR 43XX 2-6-0 is now in production – the initial batch is filling fast with pre-orders.  To ensure you get the livery you would like please ensure we have your order as soon as possible.

The model is built to1:32 scale for 45mm gauge track, gas-fired with a single flue boiler.  Built to a similar formula as our very successful 61XX 2-6-2T, the chassis is constructed from stainless steel, the wheels are un-insulated. The boiler is copper, the cab and bodywork are constructed from etched brass. The gas tank is in a water bath in the tender.  The model will run round 4′ 6″ radius curves and we are aware that there were a large number of livery variations among members of the class and will therefore be offering the variants subject to order volume. We’d like to thank David Fletcher for the marvellous drawings he has produced of this useful locomotive. You can see full details here.  UK RRP £2500.00, fully lined BR versions £2595.00.

Isle of Man and L&B coaches on their way.

We are pleased to say that we have a further run of these useful coaches on their way to us now.  We are only running coaches since the four-wheel ‘E’ Van and the ‘Pairs’ half-brake vehicles are already in stock in the UK.  These handy coaches make great 1:20.3 scale vehicles for those running 3′ gauge on 45mm track or are as just at home on 32mm gauge with 1:19 scale locomotives.  The coaches are supplied with both 45mm and 32mm gauge wheelsets which are easily changed.  Make sure you get your order in with your retailer now!

We also decided to re-run the Lynton & Barnstaple Brake Composite coach.  This is a very small, one-time production run and individual brakes will only be available with one other type of coach, either R19-19/20/21.  The UK RRP for the brake composites will be £175.00, the other coaches remain at £150.00, so, £325.00 for a pair.  Please place your orders (plus choice of additional coach) as soon as possible to avoid disappointment.

16mm (1:19) Scale ‘Large’ Quarry Hunslet – LAST CALL!

The first 100 Quarry Hunslets quickly sold through and our dealers have all had their allocations.  The final batch has now been shipped soon – don’t miss out!

As soon as we had a chance to run our model of Dolgoch last March we realised that the design brief for this small locomotive had produced an almost perfect balance of performance and duration and, despite having instinctively avoided some of the smaller designs, the possibilities for new engines were now numerous.  With Talyllyn No.1 delivered we concentrated on the Quarry Hunslet, a design whose characteristics are much the same as the TR models and has proven to be a real crowd-pleaser.

The model is gas-fired and fitted with a water top up valve, water check valve, miniature pressure gauge; constructed of stainless steel and etched brass with a copper boiler, the model will, as usual, be covered by our two-year warranty.  All colours are now ‘low stock’.  The UK RRP is £1595.00. Colours available, subject to production batch:

S19-37A Quarry Hunslet 0-4-0ST in Red
S19-37B Quarry Hunslet 0-4-0ST in Black
S19-37C Quarry Hunslet 0-4-0ST in Penrhyn Lined Black
S19-37D Quarry Hunslet 0-4-0ST in Blue

Accucraft June News

Welcome to our June update.  Hopefully the cold/wet spring is now behind us and we can look forward to getting out in the garden and running some trains again!  With the lifting of lockdown restrictions planned for this month we are very much looking forward to attending our first show in fifteen months, the National Garden Railway Show at Peterborough – you can find full details here..  News this month includes a sneak preview of the new 43XX, we now have the production sample and further images and running videos will follow shortly although delivery is now likely to be in Q3.

GWR 43XX 2-6-0 sample

The GWR 43XX 2-6-0 ‘Moguls’ were a product of Churchward’s standardisation policy at Swindon and owe their origin to the ‘family’ of locomotives he developed at the beginning of the 20th century. The class was built in a series of batches from 1911 until 1923 with Collett adding further examples (with a side-window cab) between 1925 and 1932 and in total 342 of these useful mixed traffic locomotives were built, they were at home with passenger trains at 60mph as as with moderately heavy goods trains. The class served all over the Great Western and operated to destinations as diverse as Tonbridge, Andover and Liverpool and 11 examples from the 53XX series were sent to France to serve with the Railways Operating Division (ROD) during WW1.  During the 1930s class members were withdrawn and their wheels and motion parts used to create the ‘Manors’ and ‘Granges’, a process interrupted by WW2 after which British Railways started to scrap the entire class, the last examples being withdrawn in 1964.  Luckily two survived, No. 5322, now at Didcot Railway Centre, and Collett example No. 9303 at the Severn Valley Railway.

Coming soon!  The handsome Southern Pacific P-8 4-6-2.

The Accucraft SP P-8 is due for release in July and will now also be available as a kit.

Constructed by Baldwin Locomotive Works in 1921, Southern Pacific’s fifteen P-8 class 4-6-2s #2461-2475 were obtained primarily for passenger service over the Ogden-Carlin segment of the railroad’s famed “Overland Route”. Over the route’s maximum gradient of 1.5%, a single P-8 was rated for a trailing load of 875-tons, approximately an eleven car passenger train. The P-8s thrived in this service until delivery of the larger, more powerful Mt-class 4-8-2s in the late 1920s. Most P-8s were then transferred further west for service between Oakland and Sacramento, along with the demanding Peninsula commute service between San Francisco and San Jose. Espee’s P-8 class 4-6-2s lasted until the mid-1950s, at which time they were replaced by diesels and retired.

Two Southern Pacific P-8 class locomotives were saved. SP #2467 was donated to the City of Oakland in 1960 and placed on display at Harrison Railroad Park. In April 1959, SP #2472 was donated to the City of San Mateo and placed on display at the Fairgrounds.
